Gas-Saving Tips That Will Minimize Your Trips to the Pump

Gas-Saving Tips That Will Minimize Your Trips to the Pump | Hagin's Automotive

We’ve spent a lot of time lately looking at the long lines and even longer receipts at the gas stations around town. Around the shop, we get asked all the time: "Is there anything I can actually do to stop going to the gas station so often?"

The truth is, there are a lot of myths out there, but a few small, science-backed changes to your routine and your maintenance schedule can actually save you hundreds of dollars a year. Here is the "straight talk" from the garage on what actually moves the needle on your MPG.

What Actually Works: The Maintenance Edition

You can be the most careful driver in the world, but if your car is fighting against itself, you’re going to lose money.

The "Invisible Brake"

Under-inflated Tires. Think about riding a bicycle with soft tires—it’s exhausting, right? Your car feels the same way. For every 1 PSI your tires are low, you lose about 0.2% of your fuel economy. If all four tires are 5 PSI low (which is common and often invisible to the eye), you’re effectively throwing away a gallon of gas every few fill-ups.

Let the Engine Breathe

A severely clogged air filter can choke an older engine, but even on modern fuel-injected cars, a dirty filter forces the engine to work harder during acceleration.

The Spark of Efficiency

We’ve seen worn-out spark plugs decrease fuel economy by as much as 30%. If your plugs are misfiring even slightly, you are literally dumping unburnt fuel out of your exhaust pipe.

Wheel Alignment

If your wheels are "toeing out" or "toeing in," they are essentially scrubbing sideways against the road as you drive straight. It’s like trying to run while someone is pulling on your shirt. A quick alignment check ensures your car rolls with the least amount of resistance possible.

The Great Debate: A/C vs. Windows Down

This is the most contested topic in the shop lobby. Should you sweat it out with the windows down, or blast the air conditioning?

The answer depends entirely on your speedometer. At city speeds (under 45 mph), rolling the windows down is the winner. The aerodynamic drag is low, and the A/C compressor puts a significant load on your engine. However, once you hit highway speeds (above 55 mph), the "parachute effect" of open windows creates so much wind resistance that it’s actually more efficient to roll them up and use the A/C.

Pro-Tip: If your car has been sitting in the sun, roll all the windows down for the first two minutes of your drive to let the hot air out. Your A/C will reach a comfortable temperature much faster, saving the compressor from working overtime.

Driving Habits That Drain the Tank

We like to tell our customers that your right foot is the most expensive part of your car.

Ditch the "Jackrabbit" Starts

Flooring it when the light turns green is the fastest way to empty your tank. Gentle, linear acceleration is your best friend.

The 30-Second Rule

If you’re waiting to pick someone up and you’ll be sitting for more than 30 seconds, turn off the engine. Modern engines use very little fuel to restart, but they get exactly 0 miles per gallon while idling.

Lighten the Load

We’ve all used our trunks as a secondary storage unit. But an extra 100 pounds in the car can reduce your MPG by about 1%. Clean out the sports gear and those heavy bags of salt you bought "just in case" last winter.

What Doesn't Work (The Myths)

Don’t fall for the "magic" fuel additives or magnets you see advertised online that promise to double your gas mileage. If a $20 bottle of liquid could magically increase MPG by 50%, the car manufacturers would be putting it in every vehicle at the factory.

Similarly, don't feel pressured to buy "Premium" gas unless your owner's manual explicitly requires it. If your car is designed for 87 octane, putting 91 in it won't give you more "power" or better mileage—it’ll just give you a lighter wallet.

We’re Here to Help You Save

The best way to minimize your trips to the pump is to keep your car running at peak efficiency. A well-tuned engine is a frugal engine. Ready to stop overpaying for gas?
